چکیده

Introduction Since the mid-1990s the search for extra-solar, terrestrial planets (called ‘exo-planets’ hereafter for brevity), and the possibility of life on them has received much attention. Both ESA and NASA are studying space-based telescopes that will enable the scientific community to conduct such a search. The most promising technology that will allow the detection of exoplanets and the search for biologic activity on their surface is space-based infrared nulling interferometry. Nulling interferometry allows one to superimpose the light from a star seen from slightly different angles so that the starlight is reduced, but light from sources close to the star is enhanced. ESA is studying the Darwin infrared interferometer as a candidate Cornerstone mission. The NASA mission proposal is called the Terrestrial Planet Finder (TPF). In addition to the search for exoplanets, such interferometers could also be used for generalpurpose astronomical imaging and spectroscopy with extremely high spatial resolution.

ESA has identified interferometry as one of the major goals of the Horizon 2000+ programme. Infrared interferometers are a highly sensitive astronomical instruments that enable us to observe terrestrial planets around nearby stars. In this context the Infrared Space Interferometry Mission (IRSI)/ DARWIN is studied. The current design calls for a constellation of 6 free flying telescopes using 1...

Inferring Sources in the Interplanetary Dust Cloud, from Observations and Simulations of Zodiacal Light and Thermal Emission

Interplanetary dust particles physical properties may be approached through observations of the solar light they scatter, specially its polarization, and of their thermal emission. Results, at least near the ecliptic plane, on polarization phase curves and on the heliocentric dependence of the local spatial density, albedo, polarization and temperature are summarized. As far as interpretations ...

A Dust Cloud of Ganymede Maintained by Hypervelocity Impacts of Interplanetary Micrometeoroids

A dust cloud of Ganymede has been detected by in-situ measurements with the dust detector onboard the Galileo spacecraft. The dust grains have been sensed at altitudes below five Ganymede radii (Ganymede radius = 2, 635 km). Our analysis identifies the particles in the dust cloud surrounding Ganymede by their impact direction, impact velocity, and mass distribution and implies that they have be...

Interplanetary Dust Community

Imagine a box filled with particles from hundreds of thousands of small bodies throughout the solar system, including asteroids, comets, Trojans, Centaurs, KBOs and even from other stars. Each particle contains information about the object from which it came and the space environment through which it has traveled. Largely collected near the Earth’s orbit and on the Earth itself, this box of par...
